US Bicycle Route System

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Our neighbors and good friends at Adventure Cycling just picked up a nice piece of press in the New York Times about their amazing work on the US Bicycle Route System. The United States is on a path to creating what could become the largest official bicycle route network in the world.

Henri Cartier-Bresson

Like many, he is one of my favorites. Not very original there but I don’t care. This shot was taken in Hamburg around 1953. Amazing this fellow can be so dapper riding a bike in such shitty conditions with one leg. Inspiring for sure.

Team Z

When I was young Team Z was one of my favorites. Probably having a lot to do with the graphics on the team kits…The era of Oakley Shields, Giros and Mullets. The teams was around from 1989 to 1992 and the precursor to Crédit Agricole. In 1990 Lemond won the tour for Z. Of course, peep the Delta brakes.

Slickrock Socks

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

The Slickrock Trail in Moab is perhaps one of the best known mountain bike trails in the world. It has been said that over 100,000 cyclists a year attempt to pedal up and down the naked sandstone rocks. Maybe those early settlers and their metal-shod horses found the rock slick, but the ability to stick to that sandpaper-like rock makes everything rideable. In fact, after a couple of times on the trail one can start looking for new challenges. I have a couple of ideas. Get ride of the dotted white line painted on the rock. Sure, almost everyone would get lost, but what adventure! Also, riding the trail on a fixed gear would bring great entertainment to your fellow riding partners. How about this for some motivation, the first person to ride the whole loop on a fixie gets a pair of Freeman socks.

The World Wide Web

August 1939. Three of the four Arnold children outside their farmhouse at Michigan Hill. The oldest boy earned the money to buy his bicycle. Thurston County, western Washington. Photograph by Dorothea Lange.

Raymond Bykes, Western Union No. 23, Norfolk Va. Said he was fourteen. Works until after one a.m. every night. He is precocious and not a little “tough.” Has been here at this office for only three months, but he already knows the Red Light District thoroughly and goes there constantly. He told me he often sleeps down at the Bay Line boat docks all night. Several times I saw his mother hanging around the office, but she seemed more concerned about getting his pay envelope than anything else. Photo by Lewis Wickes Hine, 1911.

125 lbs. of fabric, leather, and buckles. This is my old Voodoo MTB with an extaclcyle conversion kit. Again, not the solution, but close. and, with enough wieght on the back, one can do pretty good wheelies.
