I spent last weekend in the alternate universe called Marin County where every public and private high school has a MTB team. There has been high school MTB Racing in NorCal for the past 9 years, the brainchild of Matt Fritzinger. After Easton wrote a big check SoCal got its own league in 2009, and Colorado has a full season of High-School racing planned for 2010. The next step is the formation of NICA, a national organization dedicated to creating High School MTB leagues in all 50 states.
Three events were going on: the first NICA board meeting, the DirtBowl (a NICA fundraiser), and the boys and girls NorCal League pre-season training camps. (with a record-setting 70 girls in attendance)
Specialized, Trek & Cliff Bar pulled out the big guns for the DirtBowl, with marketing execs, demo trailers, Ned Overend and Gary Fisher in attendance.
Otis Guy, Jaquie Phelan and NICA board member Davis Wiens and a whole lotta Marin MTB faithfuls also rode in support of NICA.
SRAM, WTB and Fox Shox are also dumping big money and time into NICA, and more companies are signing up every day. The dream of High School MTB Racing coast to coast by 2020 is started to have an inspiring feeling of inevitability, a charged, delicious fated-ness. Just speaking for myself, High School would have been amazing if I could have been on the Varsity MTB team. Heck, even the JV MTB team.
