Sam started out riding like an average kid, using his bike as a tool to explore his surroundings and gain freedom. He had no idea what mountain biking was really about until his uncle, Charlie, introduced him to the joys of riding a proper mountain bike on real trails. It was then that Sam realized that growing up in Missoula, MT was a mountain biker’s dream; with countless miles of pristine trails accessible right from the door. Once hooked on riding, it was not long before Sam started dabbling in the racing scene. He did his first mountain bike race when he was 13 and was hooked from then on. With the help of incredibly supportive parents, Sam was able to key in on the National Series races and managed to make the World Championship team during his last year as a junior. He lucked out and landed a spot on USA Cycling’s U23 National Team for the next 3 seasons. It was a dream-come-true scenario and a perfect stepping stone into the professional ranks. Sam signed with the Subaru-Gary Fisher professional team in 2007 and has been riding for them since. Now, Sam home bases out of Missoula, MT for the bulk of the year and migrates down to Tucson, AZ during the winter for warm weather and to help out at The Cycling House. For the last few years Sam has been competing in the U.S. National mountain bike series as well as the World Cup series and that adds up to a lot of flight miles and more days on the road than at home. Sam has gained many amazing experiences during his travels around the world and sometimes still can’t believe that he rides a bike for a job.

travels

November 5th, 2009 by Sam Schultz

Sitting here in the Denver airport waiting to head to my last race of the season has made me think back to all of the places and experiences bike racing has led me to this year.  It’s been a travel heavy season–a synopsis of my wanderings look like this- Chile, CA, South Africa, CA, Germany, Belgium, Spain, AL, CO, Quebec, VT, NY, Australia, Switzerland, Austria, and finally MI this weekend.   In an effort to avoid getting too nostalgic I will let a few of the pictures from my travels do the talking.
